1-3 Skeleton with tusks

We split into two groups to photograph wildlife. Balfou with T and C and Akoro with M and F. At 9 am we came across an entire elephant skeleton! The bones and skull were fully visible. We found one tusk. A large part of the skeleton had sunk into the mud. I estimated that it had been lying there for at least a year. The flesh was completely decayed, but the smell made it clear that it was not years old!

After some ferreting about in the mud we found the second tusk. We took the tusks with us so that we could hand them in to the WWF/DFC in Oyem. According to Akoro, the animal was shot by poachers and had died here, but according to me it could have equally well just have died here. It would have earned poachers 10.000 CFA per kilo. Two tusks weigh approx. 8 kilo, thus that comes to 8x15 Euro = 120 Euro. For that you kill an elephant! But for a poacher that is a lot of money and who are we to pass judgement?
