3-3 A small elephant

On the second rest day I had an enjoyable dry food breakfast. I went investigating with Mathon once again and this time with Balfou. We saw a couple of what looked like ground squirrels, but without tails.

After around 1.5 hours of searching Balfou listened acutely. He had heard an elephant. I couldn't hear anything. He pointed to moving bushes about 75 metres away. Mathon and I crept in that direction. Balfou remained where he was. He was not interested in chasing elephants. Are you nuts! Step by step we came closer - I went straight towards it and Mathon took a slightly indirect route. We tried our best to be silent, but there were a few audible cracks. The elephant was also not totally silent and for the moment was not aware of our presence. He stood with his back to me and I managed to get within around 12 metres. Meanwhile I took some photos. I could not think of any way to make it turn round so these were photos of its rear. I heard a snap from Mathon's direction and the elephant's ears pricked up. It had heard something. The trunk was raised like a telescope, turned around, and it appeared to have smelt something. Something's wrong! It disappeared into the bushes. I got a kick out of that! Great! That's why we we're doing this! We walked in an arc to try to pick up its tracks but the animal had "flown".
