Evaluation

What went well

Psychologically

  • The expedition team make-up could not have been better, considering the advice we had gotten.
  • We managed to knock down Mokambo's price. It is always worthwhile taking plenty of time for price negotiations.

Practical aspects

  • All official contacts, both written and personal, proceeded smoothly and on time.
  • Route: in as far as it was passable it turned out to be a good choice.

What went wrong

Psychologically

  • We should not have hired Mokambo, but the three of us should have gone further.
  • We should have remembered the information from Bas about following the ridge.
  • Mathon: did not demonstrate sufficient supervision, was not able to maintain team spirit enough.
  • Dick: insufficient patience and feeling for the negotiation process with the locals.
  • JP: did not know as much as he said he did.

Practical aspects

  • We purchased too many provisions and kitchen utensils in Makokou.
  • Some of the stuff we took was unnecessary: petrol burner and hammocks
  • We should have taken more of some things: more mosquito nets against bees and flies.
  • We should have hired more porters to carry our stuff.
  • Route: we should not have bothered with Minkebe camp, but should have stayed in the forest.
